The Pre-Teen Mississippi Scholarship and Recognition Program was held recently at the Ramada Inn in Tupelo. One Hundred of
Mississippi’s Best and Brightest top female Honor Roll Students, ages 7-12 years old, competed for over $5,000 in educational
bonds, prizes and awards. They also qualify for competition in the 2003 Pre-Teen America National Competition to be held July
3-8, 2003 at the Peabody Hotel in Little Rock, Arkansas, where they will have the opportunity to compete for over $25,000 in
educational bonds, prizes and awards.The participants were evaluated in seven judging criteria divisions including (1) Academic Achievement (2) Volunteer Service to Church and Community (3) School Honors and Activities (4) Development of Personal Skills and Activities (5) General Knowledgeability (6) Communicative Ability (7) On-Stage Expressiveness and Overall Pre-Teen Image. The following are the Sr Division state titleholders and runners-up: 2002 Pre-Teen Mississippi (Sr.) Laken Hood - 12 year old from Blue Springs 1st Runner-up Melissa McCraw - 11 year old from Bay Springs 2nd Runner- up (tie) Kathy Houglum - 11 year old from Southaven Shannon Denney - 11 year old from West Point Kristen Harvey - 11 year old from Columbus 3rd Runner-up (tie) Ashley Thomas - 10 year old from Macon Kia Byrd - 10 year old from Jackson 4th Runner-up (tie) Candace Baker - 11 year old from Pontotoc Iesha Bridges - 11 year old Booneville Valerie Penn - 12 year old Lauderdale LaTonya Herron - 12 year old Amory
